2008 CityRoots Photo Journal now available!
UEI is excited to introduce the 2008 CityRoots Photo Journal, highlighting the hard work of over 180 dedicated community volunteers belonging to 11 neighborhood ecological restoration projects across the Boston area.
Over the course of the summer, 78 trees and close to 200 shrubs and perennials were proudly added to the Boston landscape, contributing to UEI's mission of building healthy, vibrant cities.
Congratulations to all our participants - 2008 was the most successful year in CityRoots history! See you in 2009!
Our Education Program Division
UEI's Education Program seeks to increase youth interest in science and environmental stewardship through hands-on, inquiry-based urban ecological studies.

UEI's Urban Ecology Field Studies Program provides opportunities for students to engage in real-world scientific inquiry, increase their intellectual and social self-confidence, and gain a sense of responsibility for their urban environment. School teachers and out-of-school educators are given the tools and training to lead young people in ecological investigations to answer questions about the health of their environment. Students contribute to the practice of real science by sharing their data using a citywide, online database of field studies results. UEI also provides participating teachers and OST professionals with extensive professional development and on-site support through the summer and the academic year.

Through the In-School Program:
UEI provides teachers in urban schools with curriculum, equipment, training and support for conducting ecological field studies with their students right on their school grounds, in the surrounding neighborhood or in nearby parks and natural areas.
Through the Out-of-School Time Program (OST):
The Field Studies Program supports scientific inquiry among young people outside of regular school hours after school and throughout the summer. In partnership with Boston Community Learning Centers and community based organizations, UEI provides educators and youth development professionals with curriculum, equipment, training and support for conducting ecological field studies with their students.

Greentimes is an after school program for teenage science writers. We guide over 50 students each year in the creation of two environmental newsletters: Greentimes and Greentimes JR. These "By Kids, For Kids" resources are provided for free to elementary and middle school classrooms across Massachusetts and in a few other locations throughout the country. Teachers use these teen-created materials along with companion teacher guides on how to engage their students in science-based activities in their classrooms and schools. Guest writers from all over the world are always welcome and Greentimes even sponsers an annual essay contest for its readers. Follow the link below the pictures to visit Greentimes' official website to learn how to join us or order free copies of Greentimes for a class.

The Leaders in Education, Action and Hope (LEAH) Program honors the memory of Leah Deni, a young UEI staff member dedicated to youth development and environmental stewardship in Boston who passed away in 2004. In collaboration with the Boston Public Schools (BPS) After School Program, motivated young people with an interest in leadership, mentoring and community stewardship carry on Leah's legacy by acting as peer mentors and field educators for UEI youth programs at Boston Community Learning Centers located in schools throughout the city.
