UEI is excited to introduce the 2008 CityRoots Photo Journal, highlighting the hard work of over 180 dedicated community volunteers belonging to 11 neighborhood ecological restoration projects across the Boston area.
Over the course of the summer, 78 trees and close to 200 shrubs and perennials were proudly added to the Boston landscape, contributing to UEI's mission of building healthy, vibrant cities.
Congratulations to all our participants - 2008 was the most successful year in CityRoots history! See you in 2009!

Both divisions of the Urban Ecology Institute are united in their overarching goal: to create neighborhoods where people love to live. To achieve a deeper impact across all of our programming, we increase our participants' social capital and build social cohesion in the communities we serve. Our Sustainable Cities Division works with urban residents to create real, lasting change in their communities through urban forestry projects. The groundwork laid for a network of neighborhood stewards during these projects establishes social capital that community leaders can utilize to achieve even more. The social cohesion developed in this work encompasses how people feel about themselves, each other and their community. It speaks to their sense of self, sense of place, sense of safety, commitment to environmental stewardship, belief in public institutions, their health and their level of civic and social engagement. In order to realize the Urban Ecology Institute's vision of healthy, vibrant cities, The Neighborhood Wellness Team evaluates our work to ensure that the Education Program and Sustainable Cities Divisions are maximizing the social capital and social cohesion of the communities that we serve.
